Marquette Takes Down Xavier in 3-0 Sweep

MILWAUKEE -- The Marquette University women's volleyball team topped Xavier on Friday night in straight sets (25-19, 25-19, 25-23) at the Al McGuire Center.

The Golden Eagles (15-6, 9-1) were led by sophomore Allie Barber with 18 kills and a .424 hitting percentage. Sophomore Lauren Speckman recorded her fifth double-double of the season as she dished out 44 assists with 10 digs and redshirt junior Jenna Rosenthal tallied four blocks to top off the stat sheet.

Defensively freshmen Martha Konovodoff and Hope Werch led with 19 and 18 digs, respectively, while the Golden Eagles combined for 61 digs as a team, holding the Musketeers (7-17, 2-8) to 47.

MU claimed both the first and second set with a 25-19 decision. In the second frame, Xavier held an early lead, 6-3, but tied the score at 13-13 before using an 8-0 run to pull in front, 21-13. The Musketeers threatened down the stretch before a miscue ended the set.

A tightly contested third set saw the score tied 12 times with five lead changes. Xavier led 18-13, forcing MU into a timeout, but the Golden Eagles kept pressing and trailed by just a point, 21-20, sending the Musketeers into a timeout. After Sandy Mohr connected on a kill, Marquette took a 23-22 lead and used a 3-0 run to close the set, 25-23.

The Musketeers were led by Laura Grossman with 12 kills and a .423 clip, while Meredith Klare collected 19 digs. Alexis Newsome put up a match-high six blocks.
