MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's volleyball team took control of first place in the BIG EAST Conference with a convincing 25-22, 25-18, 25-13 sweep of Creighton on Friday evening at the Al McGuire Center.

The Golden Eagles (13-5, 5-1 BIG EAST), who were swept in the previous meeting in Omaha, Neb., on Oct. 13, were paced by 13 kills from freshman outside hitter Autumn Bailey, while classmate Nele Barber added 12 on .429 hitting.

MU also received valuable contributions from its senior captains as libero Julie Jeziorowski excelled in halting the Creighton attackers with 18 digs and setter Elizabeth Koberstein helped MU hit a combined .322 (47-10-115) with 36 assists.

Junior outside hitter Leah McNary and freshman Jess Bird led the Bluejays (14-5, 5-2 BIG EAST) with eight kills apiece. Setter Michelle Sicner, who notched a triple-double in the last match against Marquette, added 25 assists and nine digs for CU.

Creighton (5-2) moves into a tie with Xavier (5-2) for second place in the BIG EAST, one half match behind the Golden Eagles.

Marquette got out to fast starts in all three sets and never trailed in the entire match.

The Golden Eagles claimed the first set 25-22 in the closest frame as Bailey led all players with seven kills on 12 error-less swings.

Marquette would then jump out to an insurmountable 11-0 in the second set. The Jays pulled the frame to within four, 21-17, as MU head coach Bond Shymansky called his only timeout of the match to stem the tide. Bird hit her ensuing serve into the net and Marquette took four of the final five points to win the set 25-18.

The Golden Eagles took a 7-2 edge out of the gate following the intermission and built its advantage throughout on its way to a 25-13 win.

Each of the previous four matchups in the series were also sweeps. The Jays swept Marquette in Milwaukee in 2010 before MU returned the favor on Creighton's home court in 2011. CU also swept the Golden Eagles in the NCAA Championship to end MU's 2012 season in Minneapolis.

Marquette women's volleyball and men's and women's soccer are now all in possession of first place in the BIG EAST Conference in their respective sports.

The Golden Eagles return to action against Villanova on Saturday at 5 p.m. and faces Georgetown on Sunday at 1 p.m. The weekend is Marquette's Alumni Weekend and is capped by Marquette's annual Dig Pink match against the Hoyas.
