Volleyball Sweeps Georgetown in Annual 'Dig Pink' Match
Oct. 27, 2013
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's volleyball team picked up a 25-14, 25-18, 29-27 sweep of Georgetown on Sunday afternoon at the Al McGuire Center during its annual 'Dig Pink' match in support of the Side-Out Foundation's fight against breast cancer.
The Golden Eagles (15-5, 7-1 BIG EAST) received 18 kills and 11 digs from freshman outside hitter Autumn Bailey, while Meghan Niemann (11 kills) and Lindsey Gosh (10 kills) also reached double digits.
Marquette dug 51 Georgetown attacks on the afternoon with money being raised on a per-dig basis for the Side-Out Foundation. Senior libero Julie Jeziorowski led the way for MU with 17 digs.
Sophomore outside hitter Lauren Saar and freshman middle Ashlie Williams notched 11 and 10 kills, respectively, to lead the Hoyas (9-13, 3-6 BIG EAST).
After winning the opening sets 25-14 and 25-18, Marquette used a large comeback in the third set to remain perfect in its last 12 frames.
Trailing 16-10 midway through the third, Marquette head coach Bond Shymansky allowed the Golden Eagles to figure it out on the court and sat on his two timeouts. That plan worked as MU took six of the next eight points, leading to a GU timeout with the Hoyas still ahead 18-16.
The Golden Eagles went on to pull within one, 19-18, before Georgetown sat at set point 24-21. GU head coach Arlisa Williams called her second timeout as MU fought back to 24-23.
After Marquette tied the frame at 24 on a kill from Bailey, the Hoyas took a 25-24 lead and Shymansky used his first timeout of the match.
The Golden Eagles fought off set point twice more in the final frame before eventually coming out victorious 29-27 on consecutive kills from Niemann.
Donations can still be made on Marquette's Side-Out Foundation profile (http://go.mu.edu/DigPink) and four online auctions are still up for bid on GoMarquette.com.
The auctions feature two Marquette Dig Pink t-shirts (your choice of sizes), one team-autographed pink Molten mini volleyball, and four (4) courtside seats to the Marquette vs. Xavier match on Friday, Nov. 22. If the Golden Eagles raise at least $7,000 by that date, Shymansky and Marquette men's basketball coach Buzz Williams will wear blue and gold striped bib overalls at that contest.
All proceeds gathered throughout the month of October, which is recognized as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the first three weeks of November, will benefit the Side-Out Foundation. The foundation awards grants to medical research organizations and entities dedicated to providing compassionate support to breast cancer patients and their families.
Marquette returns to action on Friday, Nov. 1 in Indianapolis against Butler, before playing at Xavier on Saturday.
