Oct. 31, 2010
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's volleyball team finished the month of October a perfect 10-0 after a 25-16, 25-7, 25-18 sweep of Pittsburgh Sunday afternoon at the Al McGuire Center.
The Golden Eagles' 10 consecutive wins ties a school record in NCAA Division I play. Since joining the NCAA for the 1986 season, Marquette also won 10 matches in a row from Aug. 30-Sept. 13, 1997, while the school record is 14 straight matches, recorded in 1979.
The Golden Eagles (17-7, 8-2 BIG EAST) were led by 14 kills from junior Ashley Beyer, who rebounded nicely from a sluggish performance on Friday night against West Virginia. Junior Ciara Jones notched nine kills with no errors, while senior middle hitter Rabbecka Gonyo added eight kills on 13 attacks.
The Panthers (11-16, 5-5 BIG EAST), who hit a combined -.095 (18 kills, 25 errors, 74 attacks) in the match, were paced by Imani Harper's seven kills.
The match featured only two ties, at 1-1 in both the first and third sets, and Pitt held its only lead at 1-0 in the third on a Nikki Klingsporn ball handling error.
The Golden Eagles led 6-1 and 12-3 in the first set before a pair of Panther timeouts, but MU would pull out the frame 25-16.
Pittsburgh's attempts to stop the bleeding early in the second set were to no avail as the Golden Eagles rolled to a 25-7 set victory. Beyer recorded five kills in the frame as MU hit a combined .579 (12-1-19), while holding the Panthers to an attack percentage of -.348 (4-12-23).
Marquette jumped out to a 14-7 lead before Pitt used its first timeout in the third set and the Panthers would pull within three at 18-15 on a Catherine Mayer service error. Beyer notched another five kills in the final frame for MU, while Harper added three for Pittsburgh
The Golden Eagles will look for their 11th-straight victory when they host the University of Illinois-Chicago at the Al McGuire Center on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
