Volleyball Sweeps Scarlet Knights 25-22, 25-21, 25-23

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Marquette University women's volleyball team captured its 12th consecutive win Saturday afternoon against Rutgers 25-22, 25-21, 25-23 at the College Ave. Gymnasium in Piscataway, N.J.
Junior outside hitter Ciara Jones led the Golden Eagles (19-7, 9-2 BIG EAST) with 13 kills, while classmate Ashley Beyer notched 12 of her own to go along with five digs and a pair of service aces. Marquette hit a combined .351 (43 kills, nine errors, 97 attacks) in the match, while Rutgers was held to .202 (40-20-99).
The victory marks the 12th straight win for Marquette, which has also recorded nine wins in a row in BIG EAST play after starting 0-2 in league competition. In that stretch of 12 victories, MU has won 36 of 42 sets overall, including the last 14 frames, a streak that started in the fourth set on Oct. 24 at Notre Dame.
Marquette took the opening frame 25-22 after hitting .407, with 16 kills on 32 attacks. Beyer and Jones led MU with five kills apiece in the first set, while Jones notched points 20-24 for the Golden Eagles.
The Golden Eagles notched six blocks in the second frame, including four of their next five points with the match tied at 8-8 to take a 13-9 lead. MU remained in control the rest of the set and built a 24-16 advantage before closing out the stanza 25-21.
MU burst out to a 9-1 lead in the third and final set before Rutgers knotted the set at 19-19. The Golden Eagles held on for a 25-23 victory as they hit .400 as a team (15 kills, three errors, 30 attacks) in the third frame.
Marquette surpassed last season's win total of 18 with the victory, notching its highest win total since the 22 it recorded in 2004.
The Golden Eagles will return to action Sunday at 2 p.m. ET/1 p.m. CT at Seton Hall.
