LOUISVILLE, Ky.  - Louisville took sole possession of first place in the BIG EAST Conference with a 25-22, 25-19, 25-18 victory over the Marquette University women's volleyball team Sunday afternoon at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Ky.

Preseason BIG EAST Player of the Year Lola Arslanbekova led Louisville with 18 kills and a hitting percentage of .485. U of L improves to 19-7 overall and 11-1 in the BIG EAST.

The Golden Eagles fall to 20-8 overall, 10-2 in the BIG EAST, with the loss and were led by nine kills by senior outside hitter Ashley Beyer, who also added eight digs in the contest.

MU junior middle hitter Danielle Carlson, who entered the match hitting .351 in her career against the Cardinals, notched seven kills with only one error to up her career mark to .363 against U of L.

Marquette has lost its last five matches at U of L with its last victory a 3-2 triumph on Oct. 12, 2001. MU is just 1-14 against Louisville since that victory, with the lone win coming on Nov. 12, 2010 at the Al McGuire Center.

The Cardinals are 24-4 all-time against the Golden Eagles.

The Cardinals captured the opening set 25-22 by hitting .364 and were led by eight kills from Arslanbekova who hit .667. Marquette was able to cut into an early Louisville lead and pull the frame to 23-21 on a Beyer kill. Sophomore defensive specialist Rachel Stier subbed in to serve for outside hitter Ciara Jones following Beyer's kill, but was unable to get the ball over the net as MU's rally fell short.

Louisville used 5-0 and 8-0 runs early in the second to gain control and held on for a 25-19 victory. After the Golden Eagles took their first lead of the match at 8-7, U of L ripped off eight straight for a 15-8 lead it would not relinquish.

Marquette managed just eight kills in the second set on 28 total attacks.

The Cardinals hit .556 in the third set with 17 kills on 27 attacks to take the final frame 25-18.

It is only the third time this season that Marquette has been swept. The other sweeps came at No. 14 Northern Iowa on Aug. 29 and at Middle Tennessee on Oct. 11.

Marquette returns home for its final two matches of the regular season against Notre Dame and DePaul at the Al McGuire Center on Friday, Nov. 11 and Sunday, Nov. 13, respectively. The Golden Eagles will welcome back all volleyball alumni for their Alumni Weekend which will feature an alumni match on Saturday afternoon.

Sunday's match against DePaul will be Marquette's Dig Pink! match in support of the Side-Out Foundation and its fight against breast cancer. Outside hitters Ashley Beyer and Ciara Jones, right-side hitter Holly Mertens and team manager Karla Thorpe will all be honored in a pre-match ceremony against the Blue Demons, celebrating each senior's contributions to the program.
