Volleyball Sweeps PC, Clinches BIG EAST Tournament Spot

MILWAUKEE – A 15-kill performance from sophomore Autumn Bailey led the Marquette University women’s volleyball team to a 25-16, 25-19, 25-18 sweep over BIG EAST Conference foe Providence College on Saturday at the Al McGuire Center to lock up a spot in the league tournament, which it will host on Nov. 28-29.
Providence sophomore Kayla Johnson led the way for the Friars by recording nine kills and hitting .292. Providence (5-23, 1-13 BIG EAST) never had a lead of more than two in any of the sets tonight.
The Golden Eagles won the first set 25-16 thanks to a pair of five kill performances by Bailey and Barber. A pair of 5-2 runs in the middle of the set helped MU build a lead that they would close out with a Bailey kill. During the set, Barber hit .500 followed by Kintzel at .286.
Marquette took set two by a score of 25-19, led by 11 kills from Bailey while Barber added 10 kills of her own. Barber tied the set up at 10-10 to begin a 6-2 run by the Golden Eagles. Kintzel led all Golden Eagles in the frame by hitting .357 with six kills.
The Blue and Gold finished off the sweep of Providence by taking the third frame 25-18. A kill by Meghan Niemann finished off a 6-0 run to give the Golden Eagles a 14-8 advantage. Barber closed it out with her 11th kill of the night.
While pushing its win streak to six, Marquette also clinched a spot in the BIG East tournament semifinals which will be held Nov. 28-29 at the Al McGuire Center. The Golden Eagles currently sit in second in the conference standings trailing only Creighton.
Marquette hits the road for its next two BIG EAST contests, beginning Friday, Nov. 14 at Seton Hall at 6 p.m. Central time. MU will also face Villanova on Saturday, Nov. 15 at the same time before heading home.
