Marquette Downs Georgetown in Sweep
Nov. 10, 2017
MILWAUKEE -- With a swift 3-0 (25-12, 25-9, 25-18) victory over Georgetown on Friday night, the Marquette women's volleyball team has clinched a berth in the BIG EAST Tournament, which the Golden Eagles are hosting over Thanksgiving weekend.
Redshirt junior Jenna Rosenthal had a stellar night as she led Marquette (19-8, 13-3) with 13 kills, just one error and a blistering .522 hitting percentage, while adding four blocks. Also in double digit kills was sophomore Allie Barber, connecting on 10 kills to hit at a .364 clip, while junior Anna Haak tallied eight kills.
After routing the Hoyas (7-20, 1-14) in the first and second frame with scores of 25-12 and 25-9, respectively Marquette had to pull through to its victory in the third set. The Golden Eagles lead was just one point, 7-6 after a kill from the Hoyas, but MU scored five unanswered points to extend to a 12-6 advantage. Georgetown used a 3-0 run to threaten again as Marquette held onto a 16-13 lead, but a pair of attack errors stopped the Hoyas and sophomore Madeline Mosher smashed a final kill to help the Golden Eagles claim a 25-17 win.
MU combined to hit .372 in the match, including .480 in the second set, while holding Georgetown to just .029 through the three sets. The Hoyas were led by Symone Speech with 11 kills, while Kenzie Higareda tallied a match-high 16 digs.
Marquette concludes the home portion of the regular season on Saturday when the Golden Eagles host Villanova at 6 p.m. CT. Saturday marks senior night and there will be a pre-match ceremony honoring our lone senior, Manon Geoffroy.
