Marquette Falls to St. John's 3-2

MILWAUKEE -- The Marquette University women's volleyball team fell to St. John's Sunday afternoon, 3-2 (30-32, 25-23, 25-19, 16-25, 10-15), in a five-set battle in the final home match of the season at the Al McGuire Center.

Marquette (22-6, 12-4) was paced by four players registering double-digit kills, led by Taylor Louis with 18, Jenna Rosenthal with 14, Allie Barber tying a career-high 13 and Meghan Niemann with 10 kills. At the net, Rosenthal hit at a .379 clip and tallied 10 blocks for the Golden Eagles for a double-double.

Senior setter Sara Blasier dished out 51 assists with 10 digs, as classmate Lauren Houg collected 18 digs, and Louis added 13 digs, becoming the third Golden Eagles to record a double-double in the match.

The Golden Eagles combined to hit a .184 clip, while St. John's (16-14, 7-10) owned the advantage with a .238 hitting percentage.

There were 17 ties, six lead changes and nine set points defined the first set at the Al McGuire Center. After the Golden Eagles dominated offensively for most of the set, the Red Storm rallied for a 4-0 run to even the score at 14. Louis' nine kills helped carry Marquette, but St. John's would pull ahead to achieve the first set point with the score at 24-21. Eight set points later, St. John's came through for a 32-30 victory.

Set two proved to be another battle at the net. Both the Golden Eagles (.032) and the Red Storm (.057) had low hitting percentages, but Marquette's defensive effort proved strong enough for a 25-23 win. Rosenthal tallied five of MU's six blocks.

The third set showed Marquette coming together offensively, hitting a .297 clip and holding St. John's to just .171. Freshmen Madeline Mosher and Barber pitched in five kills apiece to keep the Golden Eagles alive. A block from Rosenthal and Blasier secured the win as the Golden Eagles beat the Red Storm 25-19.

In the fourth frame, St. John's went on a 6-0 run and brought the score to 21-12, forcing MU to call timeout. Gaia Traballi registered 10 kills for the Red Storm, who collectively hit at a .395 clip. After a strong offensive effort, St. John's would take the 25-16 win to force a fifth set.

In the decisive fifth set, Marquette took a quick lead as Louis got up from the ground, ran to the net and secured a block for MU's first point. Rosenthal registered a kill, tying up the score at 10 apiece, but St. John's responded and scored five consecutive points after the equalizer and took the fifth set, 15-10, claiming the 3-2 match victory.

Traballi led the Red Storm with a match-high 32 kills and 15 digs, while Erica DiMaulo dished out 60 assists.

Marquette has two final regular season matches remaining and will travel to Butler on Friday, Nov. 18 at 5 p.m. Central time before concluding the regular season at Xavier on Saturday, Nov. 19 also at 5 p.m. CT. Saturday's match will air live on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
