QUEENS, N.Y.— A late rally by the Marquette University women’s volleyball team was not enough to overcome St. John’s as the squad fell, 3-2 (25-15, 13-15, 28-30, 25-19, 15-11) to the Red Storm on Saturday afternoon at Carnesecca Arena.

Meghan Niemann led the Golden Eagles (19-9, 10-5) with 15 kills and hit .483 with just one error and added nine blocks of MU’s combined 14 team blocks. Sara Blaseir and Taylor Louis each recorded double-doubles as Blasier dealt 45 assists with 12 digs and Louis landed 15 kills with 15 digs.

Five Golden Eagles collected double digit digs as the team combined for a season-high 96, led by 25 from libero Lauren Houg and a career-best 22 digs.

After winning the first set, Marquette dropped the next two and headed into the fourth down 2-1 in the match. The Golden Eagles trailed early in the frame, but gained a 15-11 lead after using an 11-4 run with three kills from Teal Schnurr in that stretch of play. MU took final points in the set by capitalizing on a slew of hitting errors from St. John’s (17-13, 7-8).

In the fifth set Erin Lehman found the floor on two kills, but MU trailed 7-5 and called a timeout once the deficit pressed to 10-5. Louis connected on consecutive kills to help extend the set after the Red Storm reached match point, but a final kill from Julia Cast gave St. John’s the victory.

Despite the loss, Marquette out-hit the Red Storm connecting at a .233 clip, holding St. John’s to just a .166 percentage.

The Golden Eagles still need just one victory to secure the fourth and final spot available for the BIG EAST Tournament. MU travels to Providence tomorrow for a match that begins at 11 a.m. Central time. The Friars fell to DePaul this afternoon and have just one BIG EAST victory.
