VILLANOVA, Pennsylvania – The Marquette University women’s volleyball team secured a top-three seed in the BIG EAST Conference tournament with a 25-17, 25-19, 25-19 sweep of Villanova at Jake Nevin Field House.

Sophomore outside hitter Autumn Bailey became just the third player in Marquette history to surpass 500 kills in a season with 21 to pace the Golden Eagles (23-7, 13-2 BIG EAST). Redshirt sophomore Meghan Niemann landed nine kills and five blocks, while senior Lindsey Gosh posted seven kills and four blocks. MU hit a combined .306 in the victory.

With tonight’s 54 attacks, Bailey is now first in Marquette history with 1,359 swings this season (507 kills), surpassing former AVCA All-American Ashley Beyer’s total of 1,326 set in 2011. She also has 990 kills in her career and is on pace to become the first player in MU history to reach 1,000 kills in just two seasons on Saturday against DePaul. Niemann now holds the MU single season record for block assists with 121.

The Wildcats (13-18, 6-10 BIG EAST) were led by nine kills from Claire Crutchfield and hit just .089 in the contest.

Marquette led throughout the opening set and prevailed for a 25-17 win, led by nine kills from Bailey. The Golden Eagles took their largest lead of the frame at 20-11 on a Courtney Kintzel kill as the Wildcats used their second and final timeout of the stanza. Marquette out-hit Villanova .371 to .026 in the first as the Wildcats registered eight attack errors and just nine kills.

Despite an early five point deficit, Villanova hung tight with Marquette in the second set and trailed by just one late, 20-19, on a Lauren Carpenter kill. Erin Lehman helped MU take the next point with a kill and the Golden Eagles took the final five points of the stanza for the 25-19 win.

Marquette jumped out to a 6-1 lead early in the third set and held on for a 25-19 victory. The Wildcats were able to tie the frame at 13-13 and 16-16, but the Golden Eagles were able to pull away for the final tally.

Bailey led MU in the win over Villanova on Oct. 17 with 21 kills on .419 hitting while the Wildcats hit just .084 as a squad and managed double figure kills in just one of the three sets.

Marquette leads the all-time series against the Wildcats, 11-1, with VU’s lone victory coming on Nov. 11, 2007 in Milwaukee.

The Golden Eagles return to the Al McGuire Center for their final match of the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 22 for a 6 p.m. matchup with DePaul. Right-side hitters Lindsey Gosh and Courtney Kintzel will be honored in a pre-match Senior Night ceremony.
