MU Falls to Xavier in BIG EAST Semifinals

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The No. 2 seeded Marquette women’s volleyball team fell to No. 3 seed Xavier, 3-1 (25-16, 20-25, 15-25, 19-25) in the semifinals of the 2016 BIG EAST Volleyball Championship.

Redshirt sophomore Taylor Louis led the squad with 16 kills and eight digs, while redshirt senior Meghan Niemann and freshman Allie Barber tallied 13 and 12 kills, respectively. Niemann hit .346 and added one block.

Senior setter Sara Blasier handed out 42 assists, while classmate Lauren Houg and junior Manon Geoffroy collected 13 and 11 digs, respectively.

In the first set, Xavier took the early lead and held a 10-9 advantage, but MU used a 4-0 run with back-to-back kills from Barber and jumped in front 13-10. From there the Golden Eagles did not trail again and continued to stretch their advantage before an ace from Louis sealed the win. Marquette hit a stellar .458 in the frame with four kills apiece from Louis, Barber and Niemann.

Xavier won the next two sets, 25-20 and 25-15, respectively to take a 2-1 match lead, Marquette came into the fourth set and jumped to a 12-8 lead, which extended to 15-11 after Niemann landed a kill. The Musketeers responded to use an 8-2 run, forcing Marquette to call timeout, trailing 19-17. The Golden Eagles could only manage two more points as Xavier finished the frame on a 6-2 run and hit .308 in the fourth set.

Marquette concluded the match hitting a combined, .214, but had 25 errors and just two blocks, but owned a slight 49-45 advantage in digs.

 

 

The Golden Eagles will wait for the NCAA Selection Show to see if they will earn their sixth consecutive berth. The show will air live on ESPNU at 8 p.m. Central time.
