MU Falls to Creighton in BIG EAST Championship Final

MILWAUKEE -- In an exciting, hard-fought match, the Marquette women's volleyball team fell in a 3-2 (25-22, 18-25, 25-23, 17-25, 15-11) battle to top-seeded Creighton in the final of the 2017 BIG EAST Championship held at the Al McGuire Center on Saturday.
Against Creighton (25-6) the Golden Eagles (22-9) were led by Rosenthal and sophomore Allie Barber with 18 kills each, while Rosenthal also hit at a .410 clip with three blocks. Haak totaled her seventh double-double of the season with 17 kills and 22 digs, while sophomore Lauren Speckman notched her eighth dishing out 47 assists and 11 digs.
The Golden Eagles rebounded from behind in the first set and pulled out a 25-22 win behind a .342 hitting percentage to get on the board first. Creighton grabbed the second frame, 25-18, but MU responded and used consecutive kills from Rosenthal to close out the third set with a 25-23 win to lead the match, 2-1. The Bluejays were in control of the fourth with a 25-17 win to push the decisive fifth set.
In the final frame, Marquette scored first with a kill from Haak, but Creighton took a 9-3 lead, pushing to the 15-11 victory and a 3-2 match win.
The Bluejays were led by Megan Ballenger with 16 kills as five Creighton players reached double-digit kills.
Marquette will wait to see its selection in the 2017 NCAA Volleyball Championship. The selection show will air on Sunday, Nov. 26 at 8 p.m. CT on ESPNU and the Golden Eagles will be hosting a watch party at The Union Sports Annex on 840 N. 16th Street. The viewing will be open to media and the public beginning at 7:30 p.m.
