KALAMAZOO, Mich.-- The Marquette University women's volleyball team lost their season finale to Miami (Ohio), 3-0, Saturday afternoon at the Holiday Inn West Bronco Thanksgiving Challenge.
"With today being the final game of the year, I was happy that we were able to give Terri Angst and Jessica Kieser a good amount of playing time," said interim head coach Erica Heisser. "They both played hard and did a nice job guiding their team."
"Tia (Russell) played very well tonight. It has been great to see her growth over the course of the season," said Heisser.
Marquette opened the first set with a 1-0 lead, and after Miami built a 7-3 advantage, the Golden Eagles fought to pull within one at 10-9 on a kill from Katie Vancura. After two late Marquette timeouts, the RedHawks closed out the set 25-17.
The RedHawks jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the second stanza and led 13-5 prior to the Golden Eagles' first timeout. Marquette would not come any closer than six points before Miami won the set, 25-19. Bielski registered four of her eight kills in the match's second set.
A kill from Vancura put the Golden Eagles up 1-0 to start the third before Miami responded to score the next seven points to take a commanding 7-1 lead. After a Marquette timeout, a kill from freshman Ciara Jones put the Golden Eagles back on the board at 7-2. Miami would then take the next six points to take a 13-2 lead and close out the set, 25-9. In the third, Miami hit .615 with 16 kills against zero errors, while the Golden Eagles hit .048 as a team.
