Volleyball Adds All-Conference Setter Sara Blasier
Jan. 15, 2015
MILWAUKEE – Wisconsin-native Sara Blasier has joined the Marquette University women’s volleyball program as a transfer from Rice University and will have two seasons of remaining eligibility, beginning in the fall of 2015, Marquette head coach Ryan Theis announced on Thursday afternoon.
“We are really excited to add a player of Sara’s caliber and experience,” Theis said. “I think she will fit in well and her ability to attack from the setter position makes her unique as those points can be very valuable throughout the course of a match and a season. It is nice to have a physical blocker and attacker at the net and playing balls above the net can save and score a lot of points.”
Blasier, originally from Hartford, Wisconsin, was selected to the All-Conference USA Second Team for a second straight season in 2014 and led the league in assists per set (11.07). That mark ranked her 27th nationally among all NCAA Division I setters and helped the Owls offense finish sixth in the nation with 14.45 kills per frame.
At 6-foot-1, Blasier averaged over one kill per set and also recorded 2.28 digs per frame as a redshirt sophomore while earning AVCA Southwest Region Honorable Mention accolades. The Owls hit a combined .263 under her guidance in 2014 before falling to Western Kentucky in the C-USA championship match.
In a Sept. 12, 2014 matchup against Marquette at the Al McGuire Center, Blasier led Rice to a 3-1 victory over the Golden Eagles with 37 assists and 19 digs on her way to Marquette Invitational Most Valuable Player honors.
The Slinger High School alumna was also named to the C-USA All-Freshman Team during her redshirt freshman campaign in 2013, during which she posted an average of 11.43 assists per set in league play. Blasier is also a two-time C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll selection and played club volleyball for Milwaukee Sting and Club Fusion.
She was ranked as the No. 3 player in Wisconsin in the class of 2012 by PrepVolleyball.com and a Top-150 Senior Ace, along with current MU teammates Jackie Kocken (No. 85) and Meghan Niemann (Top 150).
Marquette went 24-9 in 2014 and made its fourth-straight appearance in the NCAA Championship.
