MILWAUKEE – Marquette University head women’s volleyball coach Bond Shymansky has hired former AVCA All-American Jackie Simpson as an assistant coach, it was announced Thursday afternoon.

"Jackie has an unmatched intensity, a passion for the details of the game, and simply knows how to win,” Shymansky said. “She has been an impact person in the gym as a player and a coach her whole life and will help our program take that next step forward. Her elite-level college and professional experiences will have a profound impact on our system and our players. Jackie is lightning in a bottle, and we can't wait until she strikes our program as our new coach."

Simpson joins the Marquette coaching staff after two seasons as an assistant coach at East Carolina University where she assisted with recruiting and match preparation efforts. She also served as camp director for the Pirates in addition to organization of home tournaments.

As the starting setter at the University of Wisconsin from 2004-07, Simpson led the Badgers to a pair of Elite Eight appearances and one trip to the Sweet 16. She twice earned AVCA All-Mideast Region honors in addition to All-Big Ten First Team recognition as a junior and senior. The Downers Grove, Ill., native ended her career second in Wisconsin history with 5,235 assists (17th all-time in the Big Ten), while also ranking 12th all-time at UW in blocks.

Simpson earned Academic All-Big Ten honors while helping the Badgers to a 25-7 record as a senior in 2007 after earning AVCA Second Team All-America honors in 2006. Simpson was a three-time Big Ten Player of the Week and earned AVCA national player of the week honors in October of her junior campaign. She also was recognized on the Big Ten’s All-Freshman team in 2004 and compiled an overall record of 100-29 (.775) during her playing career in Madison.

Following her graduation from UW, Simpson coached at Winona State University in the fall of 2008 before embarking on a professional playing career in Germany and Cyprus. While in Germany, Simpson was the starting setter for VC Wiesbaden, the same club former Marquette setter Nikki Klingsporn played for in 2011.

Upon her return from Europe, Simpson served as the head coach for the 1st Alliance Volleyball Club in her native Illinois from 2010-11. She coached a pair of players to AAU All-America honors with the 1st Alliance Silver Club, while leading the squad to a third-place finish at the national tournament.

She also served as the head coach at Oregon High School in Oregon, Wis., in 2009.

Simpson graduated from Wisconsin with a bachelor’s degree in sports sociology in 2008 and will earn her master’s in sports psychology from East Carolina in 2013. She attended Downers Grove South High School, where she was a two-time prep All-American and ranked as one of the top-10 high school seniors in 2003 by PrepVolleyball.com.
