MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's volleyball team held its annual banquet last night at Joey Buona's restaurant in downtown Milwaukee.

The Golden Eagles gathered together to celebrate yet another successful season under fourth-year head coach Bond Shymansky. Through a highlight video compiled by former volunteer assistant coach Patrick Bowlin, the team was able to relive the shining moments of the 2012 season.

The Golden Eagles notched a program-record 13 BIG EAST Conference victories in 2012 en route to a 27-7 overall record. The 27 wins mark a program high for victories at the Division I level. The Golden Eagles also earned runner-up honors at the BIG EAST tournament and advanced to the NCAA Championship for the second time in as many years.

Holly Mertens was voted most valuable player, Danielle Carlson earned the coaches' award, Kelsey Mattai was named most improved player and Julie Jeziorowski earned the hustle award.

Graduated seniors Carlson, who is currently playing professionally in Sweden, and Mertens were able to join the festivities online via Facetime.

Along with the team awards, three players where honored for additional national recognition. Carlson and Mertens, along with junior Elizabeth Koberstein, earned AVCA All-American Honorable Mention in 2012. Carlson is the only player in program history to earn the honor twice.
