MILWAUKEE - Head coach Bond Shymansky of the Marquette University women's volleyball team has announced the addition of Elizabeth Koberstein to the squad’s roster, beginning with the 2012 campaign.

“We are very excited to bring one of the most talented and highly-touted setters in the nation back to her home state,” Shymansky said. “‘Bisky’ has great dynamic capability as a setter and will certainly fit in well with our offensive system and our competitive culture.”

Koberstein, a sophomore setter at the University of Kentucky, will transfer from UK to enroll at Marquette University in the summer of 2012. She will be able to participate in competition immediately and have two years of eligibility remaining.

“Her fast feet, quick hands, and gutsy decision making abilities make her a natural fit for Marquette.  We have been watching her growth and development as a setter for years, and have been impressed with her skills, her touch, her work ethic and her gamesmanship,” Shymansky said.

The Madison, Wis., native saw action in 17 matches in two seasons in Lexington, Ky., averaging 9.03 assists and 1.46 digs per set. In 2011, Koberstein helped the Wildcats upset then-No. 23 Tulsa by collecting a Southeastern Conference-record 70 assists against the Golden Hurricane on Aug. 27.

“In addition to being arguably the top setter in the country in her class, she is also a fabulous student, a tremendous person, and will be a fantastic teammate and leader for our program,” Shymansky said. “We continue to stay committed to the idea of signing the top talent in the state of Wisconsin to build our championship program, and Elizabeth Koberstein is another great example of that goal.”

Koberstein attended Madison West High School and lettered three seasons in volleyball before playing her senior year solely with her club team. Tabbed as the No. 16 overall prospect and third-best setter in the class of 2010 by PrepVolleyball.com, she racked up 657 kills and 430 assists in her three seasons at Madison West and was voted second team all-state in 2008 as a junior. Koberstein began her high school career as an outside hitter as a freshman and sophomore.

She twice earned an invitation to the USAV A1 and A2 camps and High Performance Championships and led her club team to the Junior Olympics Volleyball Championships in 2006 and 2007, finishing fifth and third, respectively.

Koberstein joins a Golden Eagles squad that made its first appearance in the NCAA Championship in 2011 after a program-best 24-11 mark, including a record of 12-2 in BIG EAST Conference play.

She will be one of nine Wisconsin natives on the roster for the 2012 campaign.
