Volleyball Ends Spring With 2-1 Victory over Northwestern

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's volleyball team staged a comeback from a one-set deficit to defeat Northwestern, 2-1, Thursday evening in its spring season finale at the Al McGuire Center.
The Golden Eagles got off to a sluggish start in the first set and fell to the Wildcats 25-14. Juniors Ciara Jones and Ashley Beyer and sophomore Danielle Carlson led MU with two kills to open the match.
Marquette used six blocks in the second stanza to notch a 25-23 victory and send the match to a pivotal third set. Carlson recorded three block assists, while fellow sophomore Kelsey Mattai and freshman Courtney Mrotek each added one solo and two assisted blocks.
The Golden Eagles held on for a 16-14 victory in the third and final set as Carlson led the way once again with two blocks and a pair of kills. Mrotek and Mattai also added two blocks.
Northwestern defeated Marquette, 3-1, on Sept. 18 when the squads met in the Wildcat Classic at Welsh-Ryan Arena. The Wildcats advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championship in 2010 and finished 20-13 overall.
