Marquette Closes Out Spring Schedule in Madison

May 3, 2018

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's volleyball team closed out a full spring schedule last week traveling to in-state rival Wisconsin to play in front of a packed house at UW Fieldhouse in Madison.

The two teams had last matched up in the 2017 NCAA Tournament. The Golden Eagles were led by Allie Barber who registered 18 kills, hitting at a .429 clip. Lauren Speckman also dished out 26 assists against the Badgers, who Marquette will now host on September 14 to mark the first regular season matchup between the two programs since 2008.

"I think we had good gains this spring," said head coach Ryan Theis. "I think each player had areas of emphasis and made strides."

Marquette had opened the off-season slate by hosting an open practice against Wisconsin at the Al McGuire Center in early April. The Golden Eagles then traveled to Northern Illinois on April 14, followed by a tune-up at UIC on April 21. Over the cross-border road trips, Marquette competed against eight total local opponents.

"I thought our wash drills against Wisconsin and our match versus Northwestern showed some real strides and individual development," said Theis. "We grew offensively but will need to get better defensively to transition next August to be ready for our extremely challenging pre-season schedule."

In the second week of September alone, the Golden Eagles will host USC, BYU and Syracuse at the Al McGuire Center. Both the Trojans (25-10) and the Cougars (30-3) were NCAA Tournament teams in 2017, while the Orange (22-14) made it to the NIVC Quarterfinals.

Marquette will return all but graduating senior Manon Geoffroy from last season's squad that finished 22-10 overall en route to a seventh-straight NCAA Tournament berth and second-place finish in the BIG EAST Conference.
