Marquette Volleyball Adds Three for 2010
May 17, 2010
MILWAUKEE - Head coach Bond Shymansky and the Marquette University women's volleyball program have announced the signing of defensive specialists Julie Jeziorowski (Crystal Lake, Ill.), Catherine Mayer (Neenah, Wis.) and Rachel Stier (San Leandro, Calif.) for the 2010-11 school year. Each has signed an acceptance of admission form and will have four years of eligibility remaining with the Golden Eagles. “We are eager to get these three excellent back-row players in our program," Shymansky said. "Our staff and team recognize that making a serious push for the BIG EAST Championship this year will take better passing and defense. We are confident that the combination of our current squad, with these new players, will make us a true contender.” Jeziorowski was a four-year letter winnner and two-time team captain at Crystal Lake Central High School under head coach Doug Blundy. She was part of a state championship team as a sophomore and as a senior helped the Tigers to a conference title and fourth-place finish at the state tournament. Jeziorowski, who chose Marquette over Northwestern, ranks among the "last 15 out" in the PrepVolleyball.com Top 100 Senior Aces, the highest rated incoming 2010 recruit for Marquette. In 2008, she broke the single season digs record at Crystal Lake with 563, and bettered her own mark in 2009 with 589. Jeziorowski was named second team all-state in 2009 and was an all-area and all-conference performer in both 2008 and 2009. The 5-foot-4 libero played junior volleyball for the Club Fusion team and head coach Eric Schultz, where she helped her squad to a 2008 national championship and a fifth-place finish in 2009. This past year, Jeziorowski was named the top libero at the National Junior Championship. “Julie has fast feet, quick reflexes, great hand-eye coordination and fantastic kinesthetic awareness. More importantly, she is fearless on defense. Julie has a nose for the ball and is never afraid to put that nose right into the action. She is an extraordinary person and will make a great addition to the chemistry of our team this season, and for years to come,” said Shymansky.
Mayer comes to Marquette after two-years at Neenah High School and spent the first two years in the prep ranks at Kimberly High School. She was a four-time volleyball letterwinner during her high school career and was a unanimous first-team all-league pick as a junior and senior under head coach Bruce Moriarty. Mayer also earned first-team all-area honors from the Appleton Post-Crescent and was an honorable mention all-state pick in 2009 by the Wisconsin Volleyball Coaches Association. A multi-sport athlete, Mayer earned a total of 11 varsity letters in high school, while also competing in basketball and soccer. Mayer played club volleyball with the Wisconsin Volleyball Academy and head coach Jason Wheelock. “Cat is such a strong athlete and competitor. She has always been an overachiever in the classroom and on the court. She has a great athletic foundation, and has been the back-row anchor for her high school and club team for several years. Her passing skills and defensive quickness will make her a valuable player. We will need her steady demeanor and steady performance this year," Shymansky said. After adding Kelsey Warner from the Golden State last spring upon taking the reigns at Marquette, Shymansky reached into California again for Rachel Stier of Bishop O'Dowd High School. Stier was a MaxPreps.com Division III First Team All-State member in 2009 after helping the Dragons to their first ever Northern California tournament championship game. A four-year letter winner under head coach Mike Gee, Stier was named First-Team All-East Bay by the Contra Costa Times in 2008 and 2009. Stier, who chose Marquette over Georgia Tech, joins Jeziorowski as a PrepVolleyball.com "Senior Ace." In additon to her solid play on the court, where she registered 436 digs in 2009, Stiel is also a star in the classroom, garnering all-state and all-conference scholar-athlete honors all four years. She is a successful junior volleyball player with the nationally renown Golden Bear Volleyball Club and started at libero for three seasons under head coach Emerson Salonga. “Rachel has a natural gift for ball control. She is the definition of the word “touch” when it comes to passing. She is explosive on defense and does a great job of staying on her feet to make the play. I know that she will be an impact player for us, and that many California schools will ultimately realize that she was the one who got away.”
