May 21, 2014
Hays will join the Golden Eagles this summer and has three years of eligibility remaining, beginning this fall.
“I'm very excited to add Ellen into the program,” Theis said of Hays. “She is extremely competitive and loves big games. I've been watching Ellen progress since she was a sophomore in high school and coached against her last year.”
The Temperance, Michigan native recorded a program single-season record 568 digs in her first year with the Rockets for an average of 4.54 per set. Hays notched 20-or-more digs in 12 of UT’s 31 matches as a freshman, including a career-high 31 digs against Ball State on Oct. 3. Her season-long digs average sits second in Toledo history and was eighth in the Mid-American conference in 2013.
She helped the Rockets to an overall record of 19-12, including a 12-4 mark in MAC play and a share of the MAC West Division title, while starting all 31 matches at libero.
Hays is a 2013 graduate of Bedford High School, where she was a four-year letter winner and a finalist for the 2012 Michigan Miss Volleyball award. She led the Mules to Michigan’s Class A state finals as a senior and holds the Bedford single-game (55) and career (1,322) digs record. Hays averaged 6.27 digs per set as a senior on her way to first team all-state accolades and notched 7.69 digs per frame as a junior and second team all-state honors.
She was listed on Prep Volleyball’s Defensive Dandy List as a second team performer in the class of 2013 and was on its “Soph 79” list as well.
The 5-foot-6 Hays joins a roster that loses three defensive specialists in graduated seniors Catherine Mayer, Rachel Stier and Marquette all-time digs leader Julie Jeziorowski.
