Marquette Unveils Full 2018 Schedule
May 31, 2018
MILWAUKEE--The Marquette University women's volleyball team and head coach Ryan Theis has announced its 2018 schedule, highlighted by contests against seven different NCAA Tournament teams.
The Golden Eagles open the 2018 campaign at a pair of tournaments, first heading to Waco, Texas at the Baylor Tournament before heading to St. Louis, Mo. for the St. Louis Tournament. In Waco, Marquette begins action against Texas State Aug. 24 and faces a challenging double-header the next day, taking on NCAA Tournament teams LSU and Baylor.
The following week Marquette will play Kansas State Aug. 31 in the opening contest of the St. Louis Tournament, followed by Western Kentucky and St. Louis in a double-header Sept. 1. Western Kentucky advanced to the second round of last year's NCAA Tournament before falling to then-No. 4 Kentucky.
After the pair of tournaments, Marquette will host a season-high six matches at home. The home opener will take place versus USC on Friday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. Central time. Marquette last played USC in 2016, when the Golden Eagles upset the No. 7 Trojans in the season-opener in Los Angeles. USC reached the Elite Eight in the 2017 NCAAs, losing to eventual-runner-up Florida.
The Golden Eagles then play host to BYU (2017 Sweet Sixteen team) and Syracuse Sept. 8 and Sept. 9, respectively. Following this pair of matches, Marquette will host in-state rival Wisconsin Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. CT. The Badgers eliminated the Golden Eagles from last season's NCAA Tournament en route to a Sweet 16 appearance. Marquette wraps up its non-conference slate versus Tulsa and Illinois State in a double-header on Saturday, Sept. 15.
"This is likely Marquette's toughest pre-season schedule ever," Theis said. "Three to four of these teams have been ranked in and near the top 10 in the country for the last several years and the remainder will be 20-win teams competing for conference championships.
"We are also excited to get Kortlyn (Henderson) and Elizabeth (Orf) back to their hometowns in the first two weekends of play."
The 2017 BIG EAST runner ups begin the conference portion of the schedule on the road, taking on Providence and perennial conference champion Creighton Sept. 21 and Sept. 23, respectively.
The Golden Eagles have their conference home opener against Georgetown Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. CT before playing host to Villanova and Xavier. Marquette then hits the road for a brief trip, traveling to DePaul in Chicago before returning home for a mid-week contest versus Butler on Wednesday, Oct. 10. Following that stint, Marquette wraps up the first half of conference play at St. John's and Seton Hall Oct. 12 and 13, respectively.
To close the month of October, Marquette welcomes DePaul Oct. 19 before hosting Creighton Oct. 26 and Providence one day later. The Golden Eagles open November on the road for a four-game trip over two weekends at Villanova, Georgetown, Butler and Xavier. Marquette finishes up the regular season at the Al McGuire Center, hosting Seton Hall Nov. 16 and St. John's Nov. 17.
"We are looking forward to pushing this group with our tough early schedule, which will help put us in position to compete for a BIG EAST Championship," said Theis.
The 2018 BIG EAST Tournament will be hosted by Creighton in Omaha with the semifinal matches set for Friday, Nov. 23 and the championship played on Saturday, Nov. 24.
Marquette has reached seven-straight NCAA Tournaments and will look to continue that streak in 2018.
