Marquette Duo Earns BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards
June 22, 2012
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Marquette University women’s volleyball player Danielle Carlson and women’s soccer player Kerry McBride were named the 2012 BIG EAST Conference Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award recipients for their respective sports, the league announced Friday morning.
The Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards are given to one student-athlete in each BIG EAST-sponsored sport based on academic credentials, athletic accolades or performances and volunteer service to the community. Student-athletes who have attained junior academic standing and a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 are eligible. The winners are chosen by the BIG EAST Faculty Athletics Representative Council.
Carlson, a senior-to-be psychology and theology double major, was a 2011 All-BIG EAST First Team selection after leading the conference and ranking 17th in the nation in hitting percentage (.385). The Marshfield, Wis., native carries a 3.7 grade point average and will serve as team captain for a second season in 2012.
Carlson is Marquette’s all-time leader in career hitting percentage at .338 and was a three-time BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll selection in 2011, while earning AVCA All-American Honorable Mention. She also helped MU reach the NCAA Championship for the first time in program history as a junior and led Marquette to back-to-back 20-win campaigns for the first time as a member of NCAA Division I.
McBride, who recently graduated with a degree in civil engineering, anchored women’s soccer's back line as its sweeper in 2011. The MAC Hermann Award candidate helped lead one of the league's best defenses to allow just seven goals in 11 conference games, and earned repeat BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year and All-BIG EAST First Team honors for her efforts.
McBride played an integral role in MU's 13 shutouts in 2011 and helped to limit the opposition to just 2.7 shots on goal per game, and just 3.0 shots on goal in BIG EAST play. Following the season, McBride also earned NSCAA First Team All-Northeast Region honors for the second consecutive season.
McBride was selected to the Capital One Academic All-America and NSCAA Women's College Scholar All-America Second Teams following the 2011 season.
