June 24, 2014
“We are very excited to add Courtney to our roster,” Theis said. “She has a great deal of high level Division I playing time and her versatility will give us a lot of options this fall. She can play multiple positions and score points both offensively and defensively.”
Kintzel, a transfer from the University of Northern Iowa, will arrive on campus for the second summer session and have two seasons of eligibility remaining for the Golden Eagles, beginning in the fall.
The 6-foot-1 middle hitter led the Panthers with 142 blocks in 2014 on her way to All-Missouri Valley Conference Second Team honors as UNI finished 23-8 overall and 15-3 in league play. Kintzel finished the season second in the MVC with 1.22 blocks per set, was 10th in hitting percentage, 11th in points and 16th in kills. She saw action in all 31 matches and 116 sets as a redshirt sophomore and was third on the squad with 307 kills, while playing with her older sister Shelby Kintzel.
Kintzel posted 18 double-figure kill matches in 2013, including a career-high 20 kills against Utah State in the second match of the season. She posted 11 kills and a career-high 12 blocks against eventual national runner-up Wisconsin on Sept. 6, 2013 and in 2012 recorded six kills and three blocks in a five-set victory at Marquette.
The Mount Vernon, Iowa native joins a front line at MU which sat sixth in the nine-team BIG EAST Conference in 2013 in blocks per set (2.00).
The Golden Eagles begin their 2014 season on Aug. 30 at noon Central time against UC Santa Barbara in Fort Collins, Colorado at the Rams Volleyball Classic.
