Aug. 2, 2017
NEW YORK-- Marquette University volleyball's Jenna Rosenthal and Allie Barber have been named to the 2017 preseason All-BIG EAST team, while the Golden Eagles ranked third in the preseason coaches' poll, the league office announced on Wednesday.
Rosenthal was a unanimous selection and was named to the All-BIG EAST first team and AVCA All-East Coast Region squad a year ago. She racked up 278 kills and 148 blocks in last season's action and spent the summer playing with the U.S. Collegiate National Team that won a gold medal in the 13th annual European Global Challenge.
Barber was last season's Co-BIG EAST Freshman of the Year and selected to the first team All-BIG EAST squad after averaging 1.99 kills and hitting a .283 clip. The sophomore also averaged 0.51 blocks per set.
The Golden Eagles received 62 total points and one first place vote, ranking just behind Butler, who received 66 points and first place Creighton, who led the conference with 81 points. The Blue Jays had four players unanimously selected to the preseason team, including preseason BIG EAST Player of the Year setter Lydia Dimke. Creighton won both the regular season and tournament title last season and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament.
Butler had one selection to the preseason team in unanimous choice Anna Logan. The Bulldogs finished in a tie for fifth in the BIG EAST last season, with a 9-9 record in conference play. Xavier, Villanova, St. John's, DePaul, Seton Hall, Georgetown and Providence rounded out the coaches' poll in that order.
Marquette has reached six straight NCAA Tournaments and opens the 2017 campaign on Friday, Aug. 25 at Hawaii.
