Marquette Picked Second in Preseason Poll

Aug. 3, 2016

NEW YORK— The Marquette University women’s volleyball team was selected second in the BIG EAST Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll, while redshirt sophomore Taylor Louis and redshirt senior Meghan Niemann were each picked as unanimous selections to the All-BIG EAST squad, it was announced Wednesday by the league office.

Marquette was tabbed second in the coaches’ poll for the fifth consecutive season, while Niemann earns preseason honors for the third-straight year and Louis garners her first. Both Louis and Niemann were All-BIG EAST first team honorees in 2015.

The Golden Eagles earned 70 points behind Creighton’s 81 points and unanimous nine first-place votes as league head coaches were not permitted to vote for their own team or players. Xavier (63 points) narrowly edged Villanova (62 points) for third place, while Butler was picked fifth with 41 points. The top four teams were the same four that advanced to last season’s BIG EAST Conference Tournament.

The Golden Eagles return five starters from last season’s 22-11 squad that reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Louis had a record-breaking first year on the court with a single-season program best 611 kills, becoming the first Marquette player in history to reach the 600-kill plateau, and averaged 4.93 kills, which was fifth in the NCAA. She earned AVCA All-American honorable mention honors in 2015.

Niemann totaled 119 blocks and averaged 0.96 per set for the Golden Eagles, while averaging a .314 attack percentage and 1.98 kills per set. She was the BIG EAST Conference Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence award winner for volleyball and was MU’s institutional BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

The Golden Eagles will open the 2016 campaign at USC on Friday, Aug. 26 at 10 p.m. Central time in Los Angeles.
