MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's volleyball team kicked off its 2012 season Wednesday afternoon at the Al McGuire Center with a pair of spirited practices.

After a full day of team meetings Tuesday, the Golden Eagles began their quest for a repeat appearance in the NCAA tournament with practices at noon and 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

The squad broke into position groups early in the first practice with head coach Bond Shymansky working with first-year setters Elizabeth Koberstein and Mary Nilles, while assitant coaches Michaela Franklin worked with the passers and Craig Dyer with the middle and outside hitters.

The opening practice was characterized by the coaching staff as very positive.

The team will head to northern Wisconsin Saturday evening for a bonding trip following seven additional practices between now and Saturday afternoon. The squad will return home Monday afternoon.

The Golden Eagles return 11 letter winners from 2011, including four starters and libero Julie Jeziorowski, but must replace three former AVCA All-Americans.
