PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Marquette University women's volleyball team was picked to finish second in the BIG EAST Conference, a preseason survey of the league's head coaches revealed Friday morning. Marquette middle hitter Danielle Carlson and right-side hitter Holly Mertens were also named to the All-BIG EAST Preseason Team. Carlson is one of four unanimous all-conference selections.

The votes were cast by the league's 14 head coaches, who were not permitted to vote for their own teams.

The Golden Eagles return four starters and libero Julie Jeziorowski from a squad which recorded the best season in program history in 2011, capped by MU's first trip to the NCAA tournament.

Carlson, a senior-to-be psychology and theology double major, was a 2011 All-BIG EAST First Team selection after leading the conference and ranking 17th in the nation in hitting percentage (.385). The Marshfield, Wis., native carries a 3.7 grade point average and will serve as team captain for a second season in 2012.

Carlson is Marquette's all-time leader in career hitting percentage at .338 and was a three-time BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll selection in 2011, while earning AVCA All-American Honorable Mention. She also helped MU reach the NCAA Championship for the first time in program history as a junior and led Marquette to back-to-back 20-win campaigns for the first time as a member of NCAA Division I.

Mertens earned All-BIG EAST tournament honors in 2011 after a standout performance for the Golden Eagles late in the season. The Stanley, Wis., native returns as a fifth-year senior in 2012.

The Golden Eagles begin the 2012 season on Friday, Aug. 24 against Bowling Green at the Al McGuire Center in the first match of the Marquette Challenge.

First-round action of the BIG EAST Volleyball Championship will begin on Nov. 16. The event spans three days and is single elimination. The championship game will take place on Nov. 18 and the tournament champion will receive the league's automatic bid to the NCAA's 32nd Annual Division I Women's Volleyball Championship.
