NEW YORK - The Marquette University women's volleyball team was picked second in the BIG EAST Conference Coaches' Poll and senior setter Elizabeth Koberstein was chosen as the Preseason BIG EAST Co-Player of the Year.

Koberstein led the BIG EAST last year with 11.64 assists per set, which ranked 10th nationally, and was an AVCA All-America Honorable Mention.  The 2012 All-BIG EAST First Team and all-tournament team selection helped Marquette hit a league-leading .277 overall and .292 in conference play.  The Madison, Wis., native was one of eight setters who trained with the U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Senior A2 Program this summer.

Koberstein shares preseason conference player of the year honors with Creighton’s Kelli Browning of nearby Waukesha, Wis.

Marquette junior right-side hitter Lindsey Gosh was also named to the preseason all-conference team with Koberstein. The Oconomowoc, Wis., native led the conference and ranked 24th nationally with 0.41 service aces per set as a sophomore, while averaging 2.77 kills and 2.16 digs per set in 2012.

Creighton, which defeated Marquette in the first round of the 2012 NCAA Championship, is the preseason pick to win the league and received seven of the nine first-place votes.

The Golden Eagles received a pair of first-place votes and trailed the Bluejays by six points in the balloting. MU was also chosen second in the 2012 preseason coaches' poll.

The votes were cast by the league's nine head coaches, who were not permitted to vote for their own  players or teams.

The 2013 BIG EAST Volleyball Championship will be held on Nov. 29-30 in Omaha, Neb., at D.J. Sokol Arena. The top four teams will compete and the tournament champion will receive the league's automatic bid to the NCAA's 33rd Division I Women's Volleyball Championship.

The Golden Eagles, who will be pursuing their third-straight NCAA Championship appearance, begin the 2013 season on Friday, Aug. 30 at Bowling Green at the Stroh Center in the first match of the Hampton Inn Invitational. MU was a program-best 27-7 overall and 13-2 in conference play last season.
