MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's volleyball team will make the trek to Cincinnati, Ohio for the 2012 Xavier Invitational, where it will face Mississippi and Tennessee Tech on Friday, Aug. 31 at the Cintas Center before playing Xavier on Saturday, Sept. 1.

SCOUTING THE COMPETITION:
TENNESSEE TECH [1-2 (0-0 OVC) | TTUSports.com | @TTUGoldenEagles]: The Golden Eagles began the season by dropping two of three matches at the Country Inn & Suites Invitational to S.C. Upstate and tournament-host Chattanooga, while defeating Alcorn State on Aug. 25. Junior outside hitter Natalie Penrod was named to the first all-tournament team of her career while leading the squad with 3.89 kills per set. Series history: first meeting.
XAVIER [3-1 (0-0 A-10) | GoXavier.com | @XavierVball]: Xavier, picked to finish second in the A-10 preseason poll, began the season at Clemson's Big Orange Bash, recording a pair of victories over South Carolina State and Coastal Carolina. Senior libero Stephanie Vorherr and outside hitter Ame White each earned all-tournament recognition during the opening weekend. Xavier swept Morehead State Tuesday. Series history: XU leads 5-4.
NEWCOMERS SHINE AT MARQUETTE CHALLENGE: Senior middle Danielle Carlson earned all-tournament honors for the fourth time in her career at the Marquette Challenge, while freshman outside hitter Erin Lehman earned her first career recognition after leading MU with 3.71 kills per set. The Green Bay native notched 12 kills in her debut against Bowling Green and 14 in the title match vs. Northwestern. Fellow freshman Ellie Rauch added 17 digs vs. the Wildcats and junior transfer Elizabeth Koberstein assisted on 40 kills against the Falcons and 43 vs. NU.
GOLDEN EAGLES PICKED SECOND IN BIG EAST: Coming off a season in which it recorded the best conference record (12-2) and finish (T-2nd) in program history, Marquette was picked second in the 2012 BIG EAST Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Golden Eagles tied for second place during the 2011 regular season and enter this year pegged for their highest finish during their eight-year affiliation with the league.
CARLSON, MERTENS EARN PRESEASON ACCOLADES: Seniors Danielle Carlson and Holly Mertens were named to the All-BIG EAST Preseason Team, a preseason survey of the league's head coaches reavealed. Carlson is one of just four unanimous all-conference selections and was a 2011 AVCA All-America Honorable Mention, while also earning first team all-conference honors last season. Carlson is vying to become the first two-time All-American in program history. Mertens production increased late in 2011, culminating in All-BIG EAST Conference Championship honors a year ago.
ALL HOME MATCHES STREAMED FOR THIRD-STRAIGHT YEAR: All Marquette volleyball home matches this fall will be streamed live on GoMarquette.com's multimedia platform, MUTube (GoMarquette.com/allaccess/). Play-by-Play duties will be shared during the campaign by Kyle Dlabay (Comm, `06), Armen Saryan (620 WTMJ/Comm, `06) and Eric Brooks (620 WTMJ). They will be joined throughout the season by special guests, including former Marquette AVCA All-American Ciara Jones (Comm, `12).

QUICK HITS/RECENT PROGRAM HISTORY:
• Marquette also leads the conference as a team with 13.57 assists and ranks second in hitting percentage (.230), kills (13.86) and service aces (1.71).
• Head coach Bond Shymansky begins his fourth year with Marquette and 11th season as an NCAA Division I head coach. Shymansky has led the Golden Eagles to consecutive 20-win campaigns and has helped MU reach the BIG EAST Championship semifinals during both of those years. MU is a combined 48-21 (23-5 BIG EAST) since 2010 and made its first NCAA Championship appearance in 2011.
• Through his first 10 seasons as head coach, Shymansky had accumulated 237 career victories and a winning percentage of .712, placing him in the top 25 all-time among NCAA Division I head coaches and first among active BIG EAST head coaches. Shymansky earned BIG EAST Conference and AVCA Northeast Region Coach of the Year honors in 2011, his second such awards after earning ACC and AVCA East Region honors in 2004.
• Six Marquette student-athletes have earned AVCA All-America honors over the last two years, while three of those players have gone on to play professionally.
UP NEXT: Marquette returns to the Al McGuire Center to host the Ambassador Hotel Golden Eagle Classic on Sept. 7-9. Eastern Illinois, No. 22 Michigan, No. 23 Northern Iowa and Wake Forest will all make the trip to Milwaukee.
