Marquette Heads to Indianapolis for Tournament

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.-After opening the 2017 campaign against a trio of ranked opponents, the Marquette University women's volleyball team is back on the road headed to Indianapolis for tournament action at IUPUI.

The Golden Eagles (1-2) are receiving votes in the AVCA Coaches Poll after defeating then-No. 20 Hawaii on its home court. MU will open against Miami (Ohio) (3-1) on Friday, Sept. 1 at 3:30 p.m. CT before taking on Wichita State (3-0) on Saturday, Sept. 2 at 9:00 a.m. CT. The Shockers are also receiving votes in the AVCA. Marquette will conclude the tournament against the host Jaguars ( 2-2) on Saturday evening at 6 p.m. CT. All matches will have live stats available through IUPUI's website, though no match will be streamed.

Sophomore Allie Barber had a great opening weekend averaging 4.42 kills per set as she hit .304 with 1.55 digs and 0.50 blocks. For her efforts she was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week. Freshmen Hope Werch and Martha Konovodoff began their collegiate careers on a high note. Werch averaged 2.42 kills per set and 1.75 digs, while Konovodoff earned the starting spot as libero and tallied 3.67 digs per set.

Friday marks the first meeting between Miami and Marquette. The Redhawks have won three of their last four matches to begin 2017, most recently defeating BIG EAST member Xavier in Cincinnati, Ohio, 3-1. Miami went 24-7 overall and 15-1 in MAC play last season and made the NCAA Tournament where they eventually fell to Oregon, 3-1.

The Shockers opened 2017 with three straight victories, sweeping Lipscomb, East Tennessee State and Belmont all 3-0. The team went 24-8 last season, including a 15-3 mark in MVC play. The Shockers switched leagues to the AAC for 2017. To end the 2016 season, Wichita State appeared in the NCAA Tournament and fell 3-1 to TCU in the first round. This will be the fifth meeting between WSU and the Golden Eagles, though the Shockers have claimed all four previous victories.



The Jaguars are coming off a pair of losses to Florida Gulf Coast (3-0) and Fort Wayne (3-0) after opening the season with back-to-back wins against Georgia Southern and Florida International. IUPUI had a mark of 12-20 (8-8 Summit League) last season and joins a new conference, the Horizon League, in 2017. MU is 3-0 all-time against the Jaguars, including a 3-0 victory last season.

Following this weekend Marquette will return to Milwaukee for the Golden Eagles 2017 home opener. The squad will welcome Loyola Chicago on Friday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. C T and host ranked Kentucky on Sunday, Sept. 10 at 1 p.m.
