MILWAUKEE - After a 2-2 opening weekend in Iowa, the Marquette University women's volleyball team will look to get back in the win column with matches Friday, Sept. 2 and Saturday, Sept. 3 at the Bluejay Invitational in Omaha, Neb.
Action at D.J. Sokol Arena is scheduled to begin Friday at 4:30 p.m., when the Golden Eagles take on South Dakota. Marquette will return to action Saturday morning with a 10 a.m. match against Northern Illinois and will play in the tournament's finale at 7:30 p.m. against host Creighton.
The Golden Eagles captured two victories last weekend at the Hawkeye Challenge by defeating Central Michigan, 3-0, and sweeping Marquette head coach Bond Shymansky's alma mater, Iowa. MU also dropped its season opener to Saint Louis, 3-1, in Iowa City and fell 3-0 at No. 14 Northern Iowa on Monday evening in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Senior outside hitter Ciara Jones leads Marquette through four matches with 3.21 kills per set, while sophomore libero Julie Jeziorowski has averaged an impressive 5.14 digs, including 21 in four-set matches against Saint Louis and Iowa.
Junior middle hitter Danielle Carlson and freshman setter Chelsea Heier were both named to the all-tournament team at the Hawkeye Challenge. Carlson averages 3.07 kills per set and is hitting .323 this season, after moving to the middle from right-side hitter. Heier is averaging 10.64 assists and 2.57 digs in her first season at Marquette.
South Dakota enters this weekend 1-3 overall with its lone win coming over Oregon State in a five-set match on Saturday, Aug. 27. That win over the Beavers was the Coyotes first over a school from the Pac-12 Conference. USD also dropped matches to Gonzaga, Wyoming and BIG EAST Conference-foe DePaul at the Wyoming Tournament. Coyote freshman Kendall Kritenbrink led South Dakota in the first weekend of play with 62 kills for an average of 3.65 per set, while earning all-tournament honors.
Northern Illinois went 2-2 while hosting the NIU Invitational Aug. 26-27, and picked up a 3-0 road victory at Green Bay on Tuesday. NIU defeated IUPUI 3-1 to open the season on Aug. 26 and picked up a sweep of Cincinnati later that night. The Huskies fell to No. 18 Iowa State and No. 14 Northern Iowa on Aug. 27.
Sophomore outside hitter Lauren Wicinski leads NIU with 5.00 kills per set and was named the Mid-American Conference West Offensive Player of the Week this week.
Invitational-host Creighton is 1-3 on the season with losses coming to Big 12 opponents Texas A&M twice and Kansas State. The Bluejays defeated Marquette 3-0 on Sept. 10 last season en route to an appearance in the 2010 NCAA Championship. Head coach Kristen Bernthal Booth was named the 2010 National Coach of the Year by Collegiate Volleyball Update after helping CU to its first NCAA appearance in her tenure.
