Konovodoff is BIG EAST Defensive Player and Freshman of the Week
Sept. 5, 2017
NEW YORK – Marquette University volleyball freshman Martha Konovodoff has been named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week and the Freshman of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday afternoon.
The Sugar Grove, Illinois native led the BIG EAST in digs per set this week with 5.25 as she had 12 digs in a three-set sweep over Miami Ohio, 24 in a five-set loss to Wichita State and 27 in a four-match win over IUPUI. Konovodoff’s 27 digs against IUPUI was a league match high for the week in all four-set matches played and a personal career high. Her 24 digs against the Shockers, who were receiving votes in last week’s poll, were the third-most in match highs this week. In three matches for Marquette, Konovodoff had just one reception error. In addition to her defensive specialties, the freshman averaged 0.42 assists and 0.25 points per set via three service aces.
This is the first weekly award for Konovodoff and the second straight week that the Golden Eagles had a major weekly award winner after Allie Barber earned offensive league honors last week.
Marquette will play its home opener this weekend with the annual Marquette Invitational. The Golden Eagles host Loyola Chicago on Friday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. Central time before welcoming No. 13 Kentucky on Sunday, Sept. 10 at 1 p.m. CT at the Al McGuire Center.
