MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's volleyball team returns to the Al McGuire Center to host the Ambassador Hotel Golden Eagle Classic on Sept. 7-9. Eastern Illinois, No. 23 Michigan, Wake Forest and No. 25 Northern Iowa will make the trip to Milwaukee for the tournament, which will run 10 a.m. Friday through the event's final contest on Sunday at 2 p.m.

All matches will feature live statistics through GameTracker, while Marquette's matches will have live, streaming video through GoMarquette.com's multimedia platform, MUTube.

Friday's 7 p.m. showdown with No. 23 Michigan is a student "Welcome Back Party" with free Pizza Hut pizza for the first 200 MU students. Saturday's match with Wake Forest is "Dollar Day," featuring $1 fountain drinks, popcorn and hot dogs at all concession stands.

SCOUTING THE COMPETITION:
EASTERN ILLINOIS [2-4 (0-0 OVC) | EIUPanthers.com | @EIU_Panthers]: EIU began the season as the runner-up at the DePaul Invitational on Aug 24-25 before dropping all three matches at the Oakland Invitational last weekend. The Panthers are led by senior outside Emily Franklin's 2.64 kills per set. Series history: EIU leads 11-1.

No. 23 MICHIGAN [7-0 (0-0 B1G) | MGoBlue.com | @umichvball]: Michigan is a perfect 7-0 after claiming titles at the Missouri Tiger Invitational and the adidas/Michigan Challenge. Junior Lexi Erwin leads UofM with 4.42 kills per set to go along with a team-leading 12 aces and 2.77 digs per set. Setter Lexi Dannemiller was MVP of the adidas Michigan Challenge, while Erwin and Molly Toon were all-tournament. Series history: UofM leads 4-0.

WAKE FOREST [3-1 (0-0 ACC) | WakeForestSports.com | @WakeForestVB]: Senior Andrea Beck was named MVP of the 2012 Deacon Invitational after helping Wake Forest top UNCW, Davidson and Winthrop for the title. Beck leads the Demon Deacons with 4.17 kills per set, while junior middle hitter Kristin Grissom averages 2.44 kills and 1.44 blocks. Series history: First Meeting.

No. 25 NORTHERN IOWA [4-3 (0-0 MVC) | UNIPanthers.com | @NORTHERNIOWAVB]: UNI finished as runner-up at the Luxe City Trojan Invite while notching a pair of wins over Boston College and Mississippi State on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1. The Panthers swept MU last season on Aug. 29 in Cedar Falls. Series history: UNI leads 3-1.

MU CLAIMS XAVIER INVITE CROWN; KOBERSTEIN MVP: Junior setter Elizabeth Koberstein of the Marquette University women's volleyball team was named to the BIG EAST Conference Weekly Honor Roll Monday after earning most valuable player honors at the Xavier Invitational. Koberstein helped the Golden Eagles (4-1) defeat Mississippi, Tennessee Tech and Xavier in Cincinnati for the tournament crown. Marquette won all nine sets on Friday and Saturday and Koberstein recorded her first double-double of the season with 37 assists and 12 digs against Xavier in the title match. Danielle Carlson and Lindsey Gosh also earned all-tournament honors.


MARQUETTE TO HOST 2012 BIG EAST CHAMPIONSHIP: Marquette University was awarded the right to host the 2012 BIG EAST Conference Women's Volleyball Championship, the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced Thursday, Aug. 30. The Al McGuire Center will welcome MU's BIG EAST foes on Friday, Nov. 16 through the title match on Sunday, Nov. 18, which will be televised live on ESPNU. It is the second year in a row, and third time since joining the league, that Marquette will host the conference tournament in Milwaukee. The Golden Eagles also hosted in 2007 and 2011 at the Al McGuire Center.

NEWCOMERS SHINE AT MARQUETTE CHALLENGE: Senior middle Danielle Carlson earned all-tournament honors for the fourth time in her career at the Marquette Challenge, while freshman outside hitter Erin Lehman earned her first career recognition after leading MU with 3.71 kills per set. The Green Bay native notched 12 kills in her debut against Bowling Green and 14 in the title match vs. Northwestern. Fellow freshman Ellie Rauch added 17 digs vs. the Wildcats and Koberstein assisted on 40 kills against the Falcons and 43 vs. NU.

ALL HOME MATCHES STREAMED FOR THIRD-STRAIGHT YEAR: All Marquette volleyball home matches this fall will be streamed live on GoMarquette.com's multimedia platform, MUTube (GoMarquette.com/allaccess/). Play-by-Play duties will be shared during the campaign by Kyle Dlabay (Comm, `06), Armen Saryan (620 WTMJ/Comm, `06) and Eric Brooks (620 WTMJ). They will be joined throughout the season by special guests, including former Marquette AVCA All-American Ciara Jones (Comm, `12).

QUICK HITS/RECENT PROGRAM HISTORY:

• Setter Elizabeth Koberstein leads the BIG EAST with 11.50 assists per set, while outside hitter Lindsey Gosh leads the league in service aces (0.94/set). MU leads the conference as a team with 14.88 kills and 13.62 assists per set and ranks second in hitting percentage (.252).

• Marquette was picked second in the BIG EAST Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll. Seniors Danielle Carlson and Holly Mertens were both All-BIG EAST Preseason Team selections

• Six Marquette players have earned AVCA All-America honors over the last two years, while three of those players have gone on to play professionally. Carlson could become MU's first two-time AA.

• Head coach Bond Shymansky earned BIG EAST Conference and AVCA Northeast Region Coach of the Year honors in 2011, his second such awards after earning ACC and AVCA East Region honors in 2004.

• Through his first 10 seasons as head coach, Shymansky had accumulated 237 career victories and a winning percentage of .712, placing him in the top 25 all-time among NCAA Division I head coaches and first among active BIG EAST head coaches.

UP NEXT: Marquette hosts its third tournament of the fall on Sept. 14-15 when it welcomes Pacific, Iowa and Milwaukee for the Marquette Invitational.
