Marquette Hosts Home Opener Friday and Sunday

MILWAUKEE--The Marquette women's volleyball team will host its first home matches of the season over the weekend, as the Golden Eagles take on Loyola-Chicago Friday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. Central time and No. 13 Kentucky Sunday, Sept. 10 at 1 p.m. CT.
There are plenty of promotions for fans taking place this weekend. On Friday, all fans in attendance will receive the 2017 schedule poster, while the first 200 students at the match will receive free pizza. Sunday is sure to be fun for the whole family as all kids 12 and under can enter the match for free. Prior to the match there will be a family festival on the concourse, which includes face painting, balloon animals, caricatures, inflatables and games.
Both matches will be streamed live and for free on GoMarquette.com with the Marquette Wire producing the broadcasts. GameTracker for each match is also available.
Marquette heads home after starting the season 3-3 following a pair of tournaments in Hawaii and Indianapolis. The Golden Eagles have already played three ranked teams on the season and notched an upset against No. 20 Hawaii to start the season. They are coming off a 2-1 weekend where they defeated Miami of Ohio and IUPUI while dropping a match against Wichita State.
Marquette has already taken home a pair of conference honors over the first two weeks of the season. Sophomore Allie Barber won BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week for her play in Hawaii and comes into Friday's action averaging 4.54 kills per set and .62 blocks. Freshman Libero Martha Konovodoff won BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week honors for her performance in Indianapolis after notching a league-high 27 digs against IUPUI and adding 24 digs against Wichita State. Konovodoff is averaging 4.46 digs per set in her debut season.
Friday's showdown is the 25th meeting between Marquette and Loyola-Chicago and first since 2013. The Ramblers hold the 14-10 series edge, but the Golden Eagles swept them in their last match-up. Loyola is 1-5 on the season after losing its first five before defeating Samford 3-1 Sunday afternoon.
The matchup between the Golden Eagles and the Wildcats marks the second season in a row these teams have faced off. Kentucky holds a 2-1 series edge, but Marquette took home last year's match, 3-1 in Lexington. The Wildcats are ranked 13th in the national poll and hold a 5-2 record, owning victories over No. 23 Utah and No. 18 USC. Leah Edmond leads the Wildcats with 4.38 kills per set.
After this weekend's action, Marquette will head across town to take on in-city foe Milwaukee on Tuesday, Sept. 12 at 6 p.m. CT. The Golden Eagles have won 10 straight against the Panthers dating back to 2008.
