Marquette Set to Host Marquette Invitational

MILWAUKEE-- After three consecutive weekends on the road, the Marquette University women's volleyball team will make its home debut at the annual Marquette Invitational Sept. 18-19 at the Al McGuire Center. The Golden Eagles will welcome Wichita State, Albany and IUPUI.

MU will face Wichita State on Friday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. Central time before facing Albany at 12 p.m. and at 7 p.m. against IUPUI.

Weekend promotions include free food for all students on Friday evening and free "All In" t-shirts for the first 400 students to Saturday night's match against IUPUI.

Marquette sits at 6-3 overall on the season, with two of those losses by a narrow margin in five sets. The Golden Eagles have defeated then-No. 21 Iowa State in Ames and a four-set victory at Missouri State. Redshirt freshman Taylor Louis has come on strong in her first season on the court. Louis leads the nation with 5.53 kills per set and has tallied a team-best 210.0 points.

SCOUTING THE COMPETITION:
WICHITA STATE [7-4 (0-0 Missouri Valley) | goshockers.con | @GoShockersVB]: The Shockers are looking to bounce back after their loss against No. 7 Illinois in the Shocker Volleyball Classic. The team looks strong after taking down South Dakota State, Northern Illinois and No. 21 Kentucky. Sophomore Abbie Lehman was named Missouri Valley Conference Scholar- Athlete of the Week and leads the team with 117 kills and the highest total attacks. Junior Dani Mostrom holds down the defensive end with 167 digs this season. Series History: Wichita State leads series 2-0.

ALBANY [5-4 (0-0 America East) | ualbanysports.com | @UAlbanyVB]: The Great Danes are looking to continue their winning streak after taking down Rutgers and Colgate in the Colgate Classic. Junior Lani Leindecker is leading the team in kills with 115 total and was the America East Player of the Week (9/14). Classmate Mikala McCauley also received recognition by being the America East Setter of the Week for the second week in a row. Series History: First Meeting.

IUPUI [7-4 (0-0 Summit League) | iupuijags.com | @IUPUIvball]: IUPUI went 2-1 in the Country Financial Volleyball Classic this past week and is looking to improve in Milwaukee. Two of the Jaguars losses come against No. 15 Kentucky and No. 19 Michigan State. Logan Walling was named Summit League Offensive Player of the Week after averaging 2.36 kills per set in the past week. Series History: Marquette leads 1-0.

MARQUETTE QUICK HITS:

Taylor Louis was selected to the BIG EAST weekly honor roll for her performance at the Pistol Pete's Showdown hosted by Wyoming last weekend. The redshirt freshman averaged 4.58 kills per set in three matches and hit .237. This is her third straight conference honor in as many weeks as she was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week on Aug. 31 and the BIG EAST honor roll on Sept. 7.

Taylor Louis' 5.53 kills per set leads the NCAA and ranks fourth in total kills with 199. Also in the top-25 among national rankings is junior Sara Blasier who is 19th in the NCAA and second in the BIG EAST with 11.28 assists per set. Junior libero Lauren Houg leads the BIG EAST with 5.44 digs per set and ranks 14th in the NCAA.

• As a squad Marquette is establishing itself as one of the top teams in the BIG EAST Conference. The Golden Eagles are second overall in assists, dishing out 13.11 per set, which is 29th nationally, while the squad is second in digs with 15.89 per contest. MU is third in the league with 13.9 kills per set, ranking 37th in the NCAA.

• After opening the season with three consecutive road tournaments Marquette is happy to be playing on its home court. Since the 2011 season the Golden Eagles are 52-12 at the Al McGuire Center, including an 11-3 record in 2014.

• Three different MU players have tallied double-doubles this season. Sara Blasier has recorded three (8/28 vs. North Dakota, 8/29 vs. Dayton and 9/4 vs. Oral Roberts), Taylor Louis has tallied two (9/4 vs. Oral Roberts and 9/5 vs. Miami), and Mary Nilles posted one against Northern Colorado on 9/12.

Taylor Louis posted a career-best 30 kills in a 3-1 victory at Missouri State on Sept. 5, which is the second-highest kills total by a BIG EAST player this season. Louis has the second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth-highest kills total in a match by a league player.

• Marquette earned the AVCA team academic award for the 2014-15 season. The Golden Eagles combined for a 3.34 GPA during the 2014-15 academic year to earn the team award for the third straight year. Seven returning student-athletes earned the 2014-15 BIG EAST All-Academic Team award for posting a GPA of 3.0 or better.
