BIG EAST Release

NEW YORK - Marquette University women's volleyball setter Gabby Benda earned the first BIG EAST Conference Freshman of the Week honor of her career on Monday after helping the Golden Eagles hit .364 in sweeps at Providence and St. John's.

Sophomore outside hitter Autumn Bailey and senior right-side Lindsey Gosh were each named to the weekly honor roll for the second time this season.

Benda averaged 9.83 assists and 2.00 digs per set to help the Golden Eagles begin BIG EAST action 2-0. The Raleigh, North Carolina, native started both matches against the Friars and Red Storm and played every point against St. John's for the first time in her career, posting 34 assists and seven digs.

Bailey hit .390 with 5.67 kills and 4.50 digs per set in the two victories, while Gosh posted averages of 2.83 kills, 1.00 service ace, 1.00 dig, 1.00 block and hit .457.

Bailey recorded 15 kills and 13 digs while hitting .361 at Providence on Friday and followed that up with match highs of 19 kills and 14 digs at St. John's, while hitting .415. The Burlington, Ontario, native has recorded double-doubles in the last eight matches.

Gosh notched 11 kills on 17 errorless swings (.647) at Providence, with four blocks, and picked up six kills and four service aces in Saturday's win at St. John's.

Benda is the first Golden Eagle to earn freshman of the week this season. Bailey earned the honor six times on her way to conference freshman of the year in 2013, while classmate Nele Barber was honored twice last season as a rookie.

This week marks the first time the conference has given offensive and defensive player of the week awards instead of solely a player of the week accolade.

Last week, middle hitter Meghan Niemann earned league player of the week after helping the Golden Eagles to a 3-0 mark, including at upset win at No. 7 Florida on Friday, Sept. 19.

The Golden Eagles host their home conference opener on Friday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. against Georgetown at the Al McGuire Center. The match against the Hoyas will feature free pizza for students, while Saturday's 6 p.m. contest against BIG EAST preseason-favorite Creighton is MU's "Gold Out" with free "Ring Out Ahoya" tee-shirts for the first 600 students and $2 admission for all fans wearing gold.
