MILWAUKEE – Redshirt senior Holly Mertens of the Marquette University women’s volleyball team was named the BIG EAST Conference Player of the Week on Monday afternoon after helping the Golden Eagles to wins at Notre Dame and DePaul.

Mertens recorded career highs of 20 kills and nine blocks in a five-set victory over Notre Dame Saturday and helped Marquette sweep DePaul Sunday with 13 kills, while hitting .667. The Stanley, Wis., native hit .592 (33-4-49) over the weekend while averaging 4.12 kills per set.

It is the first conference player of the week award for a Marquette player this season and the first of Mertens’ career.

Marquette (12-3, 3-0 BIG EAST), one of only two BIG EAST squads to remain undefeated in league play, returns to action on Friday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. against Pittsburgh at the Al McGuire Center.

The Golden Eagles, who received 12 points in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division I Top 25 Poll released Monday afternoon, also host USF on Sunday at 2 p.m.
