Oct. 2, 2008
MILWAUKEE -- The Marquette women's volleyball team returns to action at the Al McGuire Center this weekend against St. John's on Fri., Oct. 3 at 7 p.m., and Connecticut on Sun., Oct. 5 at 2 p.m. "It is going to be a great test for our team to see what we have learned," said head coach Pati Rolf. "St. John's had a huge win last week against Louisville and with UConn beating Cincinnati we have two tough matches that will really show us where we are." MU defeated Rutgers last Friday in its only match of the week, 3-0. Senior Ashlee Fisher led the way for the Golden Eagles with 14 kills, while Caryn Mastandrea registered 35 assists. Sophomore Rabbecka Gonyo had 11 kills to go along with five blocks, four of which came in the first set. "I think Rutgers was a great road win, especially with how last year went on the road in the BIG EAST. Winning on the road is not easy and it was huge to get that first conference win," said Rolf. St. John's (11-6, 2-0) enters the weekend as winners of their last six matches after defeating Louisville last Sunday in five sets. Preseason BIG EAST Conference Player of the Year Wioleta Leszczynska leads the BIG EAST in assists per game with 11.42. UConn (10-5, 1-1) will play at Syracuse on Friday before making the trip to Milwaukee for Sunday's match. For the Huskies, freshman setter Annie Luhrsen was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week for the second straight week. Friday's match against defending BIG EAST Champion St. John's will be broadcast via MUTV and be streamed on GoMarquette.com's All Access Player at no cost.
