MILWAUKEE - In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Marquette University women's volleyball squad has teamed with the Side-Out Foundation to support its Dig Pink initiative throughout the month of October, culminating in the Golden Eagles' Sunday, Oct. 21 match against Louisville.

"Dig Pink is such a wonderful event for our program as we join the fight to find a cure for breast cancer," Marquette head coach Bond Shymansky said. "The statistics speak for themselves as we contemplate that some of our team members may one day be fighting cancer. We want to make a team effort now to support those already in that fight."

Fans can help Marquette achieve its goal of a $5,000 donation by donating a set amount or on a per-dig basis for in its match against the Cardinals. Marquette and Louisville were the two teams picked atop the BIG EAST Conference Preseason Poll by the league's head coaches.

"We are counting on individuals to step up and make a pledge for each dig that our team makes in what could be the biggest match of the season for our squad," Shymansky said. "Support us in battle as we dig volleyballs to raise funds for the fight against breast cancer."

If the Golden Eagles reach their goal of $5,000, Shymansky has agreed to don a pair of the student section's `Marquette Maniacs' blue and gold overalls as he coaches MU against UConn on Friday, Nov. 2. (Please mention @digpink and @MarquetteVB on Twitter with the hashtag #GetBondinBibs)

Donations can be made in person at the Al McGuire Center during home matches throughout the month of October or on Marquette's donation page at www.Side-Out.org/cb/ous/fundraising_page/2440.

The Side-Out Foundation awards grants to medical research organizations and entities dedicated to providing compassionate support to breast cancer patients and their families.

In addition to direct donations to the Side-Out Foundation, the Golden Eagles will be selling Dig Pink t-shirts for $10 and auctioning off a 2013 summer camp experience on GoMarquette.com with all proceeds benefitting the Dig Pink initiative.

Marquette returns to action on Friday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. against Pittsburgh at the Al McGuire Center. The Golden Eagles also host USF on Sunday at 2 p.m.
