Marquette Readies For Middle Tennessee Rematch

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's volleyball team will take a break from BIG EAST Conference play and travel to Murfreesboro, Tenn., to take on Middle Tennessee at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 11, at Alumni Memorial Gym. MU topped the Blue Raiders 3-1 on Friday, Sept. 16 at the Al McGuire Center behind Ciara Jones' 16 kills.

Marquette is 15-4 overall and has captured victories in 12 of its last 13 matches dating back to Sept. 3. Marquette claimed a pair of 3-0 sweeps over Georgetown and Villanova on Friday and Sunday to remain unbeaten in BIG EAST play (5-0). 

Freshman setter Chelsea Heier was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, while senior Ciara Jones earned mention on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for their performances against Georgetown and Villanova. Heier tallied 40 assists against the Wildcats for an average of 13.30 assists per set in that match, while Jones led MU in kills in both contests, collecting 10 against the Hoyas and 16 against Villanova.

Senior Ashley Beyer became the 10th player in program history to notch 1,000 kills in Friday's victory over the Hoyas. The senior outside hitter leads the team with 3.92 points per set and is averaging 3.24 kills per set.

Junior middle hitter Danielle Carlson upped her BIG EAST-leading hitting percentage to .416 by hitting .455 in both matches. Carlson also leads the Golden Eagles with 57 blocks on the season.

Middle Tennessee (8-9 overall, 6-1 Sun Belt) has won six straight matches after beginning the season 2-9 and is in the midst of a five-match homestead. Reigning Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week Ashley Adams leads the Blue Raiders with 3.85 kills per set, while sophomore setter Angela Peyton has collected 8.33 assists per set.

In the initial meeting with Marquette, the Blue Raiders captured the first set 25-16 before allowing the Golden Eagles to rally and capture the next three frames. Adams and teammate Alyssa Wistrick led Middle Tennessee with 14 kills apiece in a losing effort. 

Marquette will resume BIG EAST play at Syracuse on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 1 p.m. Central time.
