Volleyball Resumes BIG EAST Action Saturday at Syracuse

MILWAUKEE – Sporting a 5-0 record in BIG EAST Conference action, the Marquette University women’s volleyball team returns to league play at 1 p.m. Central time Saturday, Oct. 15 against Syracuse at the Women’s Building in Syracuse, N.Y.
Marquette (15-5, 5-0 BIG EAST) snapped a six-match winning streak Tuesday evening by losing at Middle Tennessee, 3-0. MU previously defeated the Blue Raiders on Friday, Sept. 16 at the Al McGuire Center, 3-1, in the Marquette Challenge.
Senior outside hitter Ashley Beyer led MU with 11 kills as the Blue Raiders took the match in straight sets by hitting .369 as a team.
Freshman setter Chelsea Heier was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week on Monday after helping MU to a pair of victories over Georgetown and Villanova last weekend. Heier leads the conference in assists per set with 11.92 per frame and entered the week fourth nationally (12.00 assists) in that category. Senior outside hitter Ciara Jones also earned recognition by being named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the third time in her career.
The Orange (13-7, 3-2 BIG EAST) defeated Villanova, 3-1, Friday evening at the Women’s Building before falling in a five-set match to Georgetown. The win over Villanova was the 100th BIG EAST victory for Syracuse head coach Jing Pu.
Junior middle blocker Sam Hinz, also a member of the conference’s weekly honor roll, led the way for Syracuse against the Hoyas with 13 blocks, the most in a BIG EAST contest this season.
Marquette will play one final non-conference match on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at Western Michigan before closing out BIG EAST play over the next four weeks.
