MU Travels to Villanova, Georgetown for BIG EAST Matchups
Oct. 26, 2016
MILWAUKEE -- The Marquette University women's volleyball team will travel to the East coast for weekend matchups against Villanova on Oct. 28 at 6 p.m. Central time, and Georgetown on Oct. 29 at 5 p.m. CT.
Both matches will stream live for a fee on www.villanova.com and www.guhoyas.com, respectively, while Gametracker will provide livestats. Updates will be available on Twitter (@MarquetteVB) as well.
After falling against Creighton, in a battle of the top two teams in the BIG EAST conference last Saturday, the Golden Eagles will look to start a new winning streak, after the previous streak of six was snapped.
MU was able, however, to split the weekend homestand after sweeping Providence on Friday night. Against the Friars, Taylor Louis provided 15 kills for Marquette, while Meghan Niemann added six kills to go along with a .600 clip. Niemann, who also tallied seven kills against Creighton, surpassed Martha Meyer for the most all-time total blocks in a career. The redshirt senior now has 79 total blocks this season, and 434 in her career.
MU continues to be led by Louis, who is second in the conference with 4.43 kills per set. The redshirt junior has totaled 381 kills already this season. With just eight more kills, Louis, a redshirt sophomore, will pass the 1,000-kills mark for her career and become just the second sophomore in MU history to eclipse the 1,000 kill plateau.
Marquette will open the trip hoping to avenge a loss from earlier this year, when Villanova handed MU its first home loss of the season. Villanova (15-8, 6-4) currently sits in the fourth position of the BIG EAST standings and are led by the duo of Allie Loitz and Claire Crutchfield who have tallied 278 and 253 kills, respectively. Loitz's numbers are good enough for third in the conference, while Crutchfield places in seventh.
The trip will conclude when the Golden Eagles take on Georgetown in the nation's capital. The Hoyas (6-17, 2-8) have lost four straight and currently sit in ninth place in the BIG EAST. GU is paced by Alyssa Sinnette and Symone Speech who have both tallied 259 kills this year. Speech, however, leads the team by hitting at a .343 clip. The Hoyas will face DePaul on Friday night before Marquette.
Following the match with Georgetwon, MU will prepare for its final homestand of the season, starting with a Nov. 5 match against DePaul, scheduled to being at 6 p.m. CT.
