MILWAUKEE - Danielle Carlson of the Marquette University women's volleyball team was named the BIG EAST Conference Player of the Week for the first time in her career, the league announced Monday, Oct. 29.

Carlson helped Marquette (20-4, 10-1 BIG EAST) to a pair of victories at Georgetown and Villanova while hitting .519 (29-2-52) with 4.14 kills and 1.43 blocks per set. The senior middle hitter recorded just two errors on the weekend, with both coming in Sunday's sweep of Villanova. She led Marquette with a 16 kills against the Hoyas Friday evening and landed a match-high 13 at Villanova.

The Marshfield, Wis., native improved her BIG EAST-leading hitting percentage mark to .385 (264-35-595) as the Golden Eagles notched their 20th victory Sunday afternoon. Marquette also clinched a spot in the 2012 BIG EAST Women’s Volleyball Championship, which it hosts Nov. 16-18 at the Al McGuire Center.

It is the second time this season that a Marquette student-athlete has earned player of the week honors. Classmate Holly Mertens also earned the distinction on Oct. 1 after MU defeated Notre Dame and DePaul on the road.

Marquette is receiving 30 points in Monday’s latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Poll, three spots outside the top 25.

The Golden Eagles return to action in a Tuesday, Oct. 30 showdown at the Klotsche Center against the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The match at Milwaukee will be televised live on Time Warner Cable Sports32.
