Barber is BIG EAST's Top Freshman, Koberstein Honored

MILWAUKEE - For the second time this season, Marquette University outside hitter Nele Barber has earned BIG EAST Conference Freshman of the Week honors for women's volleyball, the league announced Monday afternoon.

Senior setter Elizabeth Koberstein was also named to the conference honor roll, the fourth weekly accolade for the preseason conference co-player of the year.

The Golden Eagles (17-5, 9-1 BIG EAST) are receiving votes in Monday's AVCA Coaches Poll and sit two matches ahead of Xavier and Creighton  in the BIG EAST standings. They are also 11th nationally in NCAA Division I RPI, the highest such mark in program history.

Barber landed averaged 5.38 kills per set in victories at Butler and at Xavier over the weekend, including a career-high 23 against the Bulldogs on Friday evening. The native of Berlin, Germany continued her dominance with 20 kills at Xavier on Saturday, helping MU recover from an opening set loss for a four-set victory.

In addition to Barber's two freshman of the week awards, teammate Autumn Bailey has earned the honor five times.

Koberstein paced Marquette to a .294 combined hitting percentage in the matches and averaged 13.25 assists per set. She sits sixth in NCAA Division I with 11.86 assists per set on the season.

Marquette hosts Seton Hall on Friday, Nov. 8 at 6 p.m. before welcoming St. John's to the Al McGuire Center at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 10.
