Marquette (22-8, 12-2 BIG EAST) tied for second in the league standings with Cincinnati but lost the tiebreaker to the Bearcats as UC topped the Golden Eagles, 3-1, on Saturday Nov. 5 in Cincinnati.

During the season, Marquette topped Seton Hall, 3-2, after rallying from a 2-0 deficit led by senior outside hitter Ashley Beyer's 16 kills and 11 digs, along with classmate Ciara Jones' 14-kill performance.

Should Marquette win its quarterfinal contest, it would face the winner of Friday's 3:30 p.m. matchup of No. 2 Cincinnati and No. 7 Villanova.

MU is 11-1 at home this season and 31-7 at the Al McGuire Center since head coach Bond Shymansky took over in 2009. The Golden Eagles' lone defeat of the 2011 campaign was a five-set match against No. 9 Minnesota on Sept. 18.

Marquette is 2-3 all-time in the BIG EAST tournament since joining the league in 2005. The Golden Eagles have earned both wins over Pittsburgh in the confernence quarterfinals and all three losses have come at the hands of Louisville. MU fell to U of L in the semifinals in both 2010 (3-1) and 2006 (3-2) and lost to the Cardinals in the quarterfinals in 2005 (3-1).
