Beyer, Gonyo and Klingsporn Named First Team All-BIG EAST
Nov. 18, 2010
PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Seniors Rabbecka Gonyo and Nikki Klingsporn along with junior Ashley Beyer of the Marquette University women's volleyball team were named to the All-BIG EAST Conference First Team, the league announced Thursday evening at its annual awards banquet at the Westin Convention Center in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Beyer, Gonyo and Klingsporn are the first All-BIG EAST First Team selections for the Golden Eagles since Kim Todd earned the honor in 2007. Marquette is one of only two schools represented by three selections to the first team, along with BIG EAST Regular Season Champion, Cincinnati.
Beyer, an outside hitter from Bloomington, Ill., is second in the conference in kills with 3.85 per set and has been named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll three times, in addition to earning BIG EAST Player of the Week honors on Oct. 25. Beyer and Klingsporn were named to the all-conference second team in 2009.
As Marquette's setter, Klingsporn guided one of the nation's most prolific offenses in 2010, while ranking fifth in the nation with 12.02 assists per set. The Oakdale, Minn., native was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll twice in 2010 and has etched her name in the school record book with almost 2,500 assists in just under two seasons with the program.
Gonyo, a native of Ingleside, Ill., has been named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll twice and leads the conference with an attack percentage of .434. The middle hitter ranks second in the nation in that category and is Marquette's all-time career leader. She also is second in school history in block assists and total blocks.
The last time two Marquette players were named to the All-BIG EAST First Team was 2006, when former Golden Eagles Todd and Jamie Mueller also earned AVCA All-America mention.
Cincinnati senior Stephanie Niemer was the unanimous choice as the BIG EAST Player of the Year, while Bearcats’ head coach Reed Sunahara was named Coach of the Year. Villanova junior Kim Maroon was selected for Libero of the Year and Notre Dame rookie Andrea McHugh earned Freshman of the Year honors.
This year’s BIG EAST Championship will be held Nov. 19-21 at Fitzgerald Field House on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh. All quarterfinal and semifinal matches will be streamed live for free on www.bigeast.tv . The championship match will be exclusively broadcast live on ESPNU on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. ET.
