Holly Mertens Named BIG EAST Championship All-Tournament

Holly Mertens earns the first honor of her career

MILWAUKEE – Holly Mertens of the Marquette University women’s volleyball team was named to the 2011 BIG EAST Conference Women’s Volleyball Championship All-Tournament Team, the league announced Sunday afternoon at the Al McGuire Center.

The redshirt junior helped Marquette to the conference semifinals for the second year in a row by hitting a combined .345 with 27 kills on 58 attacks. The Stanley, Wis., native had 15 kills in a sweep of Seton Hall on Friday evening and 12 kills in a five-set loss to second-seeded Cincinnati on Saturday.

The Bearcats went on to claim the 2011 BIG EAST Championship for the first time Sunday afternoon by sweeping No. 5 Notre Dame in the championship match at the Al McGuire Center.

The Golden Eagles return to action Saturday, Nov. 26 against Northern Illinois at 4 p.m. in Dekalb, Ill. Marquette previously met NIU on Saturday, Sept. 3 at the Bluejay Invitational in Omaha, Neb., with the Huskies coming out victorious, 3-1.
