MILWAUKEE--The No. 2 seed Marquette women's volleyball team is slated to open the 2016 BIG EAST Volleyball Championship presented by Jeep on Friday at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana against a familiar opponent. The Golden Eagles will take on No. 3 seed Xavier in the semifinals at 2:00 p.m. Central time after most recently concluding the regular season at Xavier less than a week ago.

Friday's semifinals will air live on the BIG EAST Digital Network with Will Haskett and Sara Marshall calling the action, while Saturday's championship match will air on FS2 with Bob Brainerd and Michelle Griffin-Wenzel on the call at 1:30 p.m. CT.

The Marquette University women's volleyball team finished the BIG EAST regular season with a 3-1 (23-25, 25-19, 20-25, 19-25) loss at Xavier on Saturday, but with an 11-5 league record the squad has earned the No. 2 seed in the 2016 BIG EAST Tournament.

Marquette finished the regular season with a 23-7 overall record and 13-5 mark in BIG EAST action, while Xavier owns a 17-12 record and also earned a 13-5 league record, but the Golden Eagles earned the No. 2 seed in the tie-breaking process after earning a 3-0 sweep in the first meeting of the season.

The Golden Eagles hold the all-time series advantage over Xavier, 10-8, though the teams' split the season series with each winning on their home court.

For the first time in program history, Marquette had four players selected to the All-BIG EAST First Team, including Allie Barber who was named Co-Freshman of the Year. Redshirt senior Meghan Niemann earned her fourth consecutive all-conference honor, while redshirt sophomore Taylor Louis earned her second straight unanimous pick. Classmate Jenna Rosenthal earned her first all-conference award.

The Golden Eagles are looking for their second-ever championship crown after claiming the title on their home court in 2013. Last season, MU fell in the semifinals to eventual-winner Creighton in a five-set match.
